I'm going to start changing the time I work out from the evening to the morning hours before I go to work. My question is would it be better for me to eat breakfast and then workout or vice versa? I never like to do anything physically strenuous after a meal, but in the morning it seems like the fuel from breakfast would be necessary.

you definetly need to get something in your body once you wake up...

breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day mainly becuase when you wake up, your body has nothing to burn or feed off of...so if you go without eating anything...the next thing it targets is the protein in your body. So what I would recommend is eating an apple or banana and like an energy bar of some sort...then when your done working out, eat a good breakfast

Absolutely eat a good breakfast BUT give it some time to digest before you work out. I have been advised by a nurtionist to wait one hour after eating to work out.

wil is correct in giving it time to settle. I sometimes workout at 5am because I know I'll have a busy day (client meetings, long day testing, etc) and I wake up at like 4:15 and smash a good pre-workout shake and i won't leave until like 450 so I'll get to the gym by 5:10 and workout then. Gotta give you some fuel to workoout with. I eat breakfast after my work but again its another reason I wake up so early.

Wil is 100% correct

Give it AT LEAST an hour.

you will just put stress on your heart if you do not wait.

Thanks for the quick responses. Since I'm now going to rely more on a supplement of some sort before working out and then eating my regular breakfast, is there any bar/shake that you guys would recommend?

Trying to cut down on weight.

doesn't really matter for your bout to go workout anyway..

my suggestion Get a good pre workout shake that has like 25 g protien and 30-35 g of carbs. That will get you on your way for working out. Then you can eat breakfast after

I would eat a small bowl of oatmeal with some fruit to get you through your workout. You don't want to get up early in the morning and then run out of gas going through you workout.

I have also read that working out on an empty stomach in the morning is a good way to burn fat. Since your body is in need of something to burn for energy it starts to feed off the fat in your body to burn. I might be wrong but I thought that I read this in a Men's Health.

if you can, do cardio before eating anything,,, you will immediately start burning fat faster..

ssi is correct.. what it means is since you were sleep yoru body has really no source of energy so when you do cardio on an empty stomach what happens is your body needs energy so it will tap into your fat storage and covert that to energy.. good for weight loss.

Is there a consensus that not eating before cardio is a healthy thing? It would make sense that it would work, but I would also think there are drawbacks as well.

I work out in the AM.......No breakfast....Just a little bit of coffee to get me going 1st. Then after I cool down, then I sit down for a good breakfast. Works for me. I can't work out after I have eaten. I can't run on the treadmill with Breakfast Gut.

Eating at least 5 times a day is the best for you if you want to get good results working out, you could skip one of those meals if it is absolutely necessary, but breakfast is a must!

Cardio on an empty stomach in the morning is the way to go but if you will be lifting, you need to eat before.
